declaration of Major

Declaring a Major

In addition to completing the general education requirements, each student must pursue a least one area of concentration. This is done by completing the requirements for a major concentration. All undergraduate students are encouraged to declare a major no later than the spring of their sophomore year (27 semester hours). If a student chooses to remain undeclared, then it will be neccessary to begin taking prerequisite courses for many majors during the first two years. In deciding on a major, students are encouraged to take advantage of the many services provided at Mount Olive College.

Helpful steps to deciding your major:

Visit the Student Success Center – The Student Success Center offers career counseling and special tests to help determine aptitude and interests. Check out their web page for more information at www.moc.edu/studentsuccesscenter to see what they have to offer and take advantage of their services.

Read the college catalog – While this seems very basic, it is a resource that is often overlooked. The catalog listings include course descriptions for you to read, and information within the areas of study available. The catalog is located on the Mount Olive College Web page under Academics/Catalog at www.moc.edu.

Speak with other students in the major – Advanced students in the major will be able to give you an idea what their course of study has been, what their career goals are, descriptions of professors, etc.

Speak to alumni – This can be done informally or you may solicit help from Alumni Relations at www.moc.edu/alumni.

Visit with professors – Professors are great sources of information about what students in the major have gone on to do and what kinds of benefits students get from majoring in their subject area.

Utilize your Academic Advisor – Your advisor is ready to answer questions about choosing a major and direct you to the appropriate resources.
