Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Recreation & Leisure Studies

The Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Recreation & Leisure Studies allows students to specialize in either Leisure Service Management , Recreational Therapy , Sport Management , Exercise Science , or Physical Education.

The Generalist/Transfer customizes  programs for students interested in a variety of careers (i.e., tourism, employee recreation, church recreation, outdoor recreation, etc.) by combining Recreation/Leisure Studies courses with appropriate courses across the Mount Olive College curriculum and community college credits.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Recreation/Leisure Studies are designed to provide a student with a broad knowledge in the field of Recreation and Leisure Services, as well as specific skills in a professional work area. The curriculum includes courses emphasizing philosophy, history, effective use of leisure, program planning and leadership, skill development, organization and administration, management, field experiences, outdoor education, and related course work tailored to meet a student's professional goals in the recreation, parks, and leisure service profession.

B.A. or B.S. Degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies
  • Minimum degree requirements of 126 semester hours (sh) of credit as follows:
  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 (2.5 for Physical Education) on all studies at Mount Olive College with no grade lower than C in the major. Students must complete 32 sh in residence, at least 18 of which must be in the major.
  • General Education Requirements: 43-44 sh*

  • Leisure Service Management prepares students for leadership and supervisory positions in public, voluntary, and private recreation and leisure service agencies.

  • Recreational Therapy prepares students for practitioner and supervisory positions in health care agencies and community-based recreation for special populations programs. Upon completion of the program graduates are eligible for North Carolina licensure and national certification.

  • Physical Education prepares students to apply for teaching positions and seek licensure through the North Carolina lateral entry program; it also prepares students for graduate studies in teacher licensure programs. The degree does not include a teaching license.

    • General electives: 16-17 sh (B.A. in Recreation/Leisure Studies requires 6-12 sh in a foreign language, with at least 6 sh at the 200-level. )
    • *A maximum of 18 sh of GER courses may be duplicated in electives/related studies.
    • ** A student may only repeat a RLS/HLH/PED core or professional emphasis course twice in order to achieve a grade of C or above. When a student fails to achieve a C or above after two attempts in a course, the instructor, the student's advisor and the department chair will meet with the student to determine appropriate remedial action.

Bachelor of Applied Science in Recreation & Leisure Studies

The Bachelor of Applied Science is for the student with an Associate of Applied Science who completes a cognate in Recreation & Leisure Studies .

B.A.S. Degree:  Cognate in Recreation/Leisure Studies
  • A minimum degree requirement of 126 semester hours of credit (sh) as follows:
  • Completion of at least 126 sh with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all studies at Mount Olive College with no grade lower than C in the cognate. Students must complete 32 sh in residence, at least 18 of which must be in the cognate.
  • General Education Requirements: 43 sh*
  • Cognate: 27-36 sh**
  • General Electives/Related Studies: 12-15 sh
  • Credits for Associate in Applied Science Degree: Up to 64 sh, some of which may be applied to items 2-4 above, as approved by the department chair.
  • *A maximum of 18 sh of GER courses may be duplicated in electives/related studies.

Minors

A minor in Recreation & Leisure Studies requires a minimum of 18 sh not including the GER, with no grade below C in the minor.  Courses must include RLS 110, 250 or 311, 300, and 9 sh from 300/400-level RLS/HLH/PED courses.  Consult a curriculum advisor or the Department Chair for emphasis area guidance sheets.

Associate of Science Degree in Health Science

Through an articulation agreement between Mount Olive College and Watts School of Nursing, a student can graduate with an associate of science degree from Mount Olive College and complete the nursing requirements at Watts School of Nursing to apply for the NCLEX exam for licensure as a registered nurse.  To qualify for the associate of science degree, a student must make application to and be accepted for admission into the Watts School of Nursing.  Admission information is available on the Watts School of Nursing website at wattsschoolofnursing.org .

Recreation Majors Club

The purpose of the Mount Olive College Society of Recreation Majors is twofold:

  • to promote an understanding of the need for positive leisure in one's life
  • and to enhance the development of future practitioners in the fields of recreation/leisure/park services.

The club focuses on personal and professional growth through service to the College and community, involvement in professional organizations, and networking with professionals in the field.
