The Alumni Cross Walk
The Alumni Cross Walk is a reminder of our founders' vision; a manifestation of pride in the accomplishments of the College's alumni; and a symbol of our hopes, dreams, and prayers for the future.
What is the Alumni Cross Walk?
- It is actually a beautifully landscaped garden with a garden house and walkways. The garden house is superimposed on the center of a brick walkway in the shape of a Celtic cross. The structure is octagonal and open. The roof is supported by eight columns in a contemporary architectural style consistent with other buildings on campus.
- Centered under the roof is a pedestal containing the cornerstone and bell from the old school on Breazeale Avenue.
- The walkway, made of the actual red bricks from the old school building, is landscaped with shrubbery and seasonal flowers. It is located on the commons just north of College Hall and in line with Moye Library.
What is the purpose of the Alumni Cross Walk?
- To provide a meaningful connection between the present and the past. Mount Olive College's heritage and reputation result from the vision, achievements and support of its founders, alumni and benefactors.
- To honor the many Mount Olive area citizens who received their primary education in the old brick school on Breazeale Avenue before the building was purchased by the College in 1953 and to symbolize the strong linkage that has existed between the College and the citizens of Mount Olive over the years.
- To recognize in perpetuity the faith and generosity of so many to make possible what exists today.
- To inspire present students and alumni to maintain a life-long relationship with their alma mater and accept the responsibility for its continued viability as an institution of higher learning by contributing to the extent that they can.
