VETERANS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS
Mount Olive College is approved by the State of North Carolina for the enrollment of students who are eligible to receive veteran’s benefits. The Mount Olive College Veterans Affairs Office serves as a liaison between student veterans and dependents with the Department of Veterans Affairs. We assist students with the processing of VA forms for DVA educational benefits, advise students about VA procedural requirements, and certify enrollment of veterans and dependents to the DVA.
Post 9/11 GI BILL - Chapter 33
The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Transfer of Post 9/11 GI BILL Benefits to Dependents - Chapter 33 TEB
For the first time in history, service members enrolled in the Post – 9/11 GI GILL program are able to transfer unused educational benefits to their spouses or children.
Montgomery GI BILL - Active Duty (MGIB-AD) - Chapter 30
The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty.
Montgomery GI BILL - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) - Chapter 1606
The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) - Chapter 1607
REAP (Chapter 1607 of title 10, U.S. Code) is a new benefit providing educational assistance to members of the reserve components - Selected Reserve (SR) and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) - who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress.
Survivors and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) - Chapter 35
DEA provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.
Post-Vietnam Era Veterans' Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) - Chapter 32
VEAP is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.
Federal Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) - Chapter 31
Any veteran with a compensable disability rating of 10% or more is invited to file an application for Vocational Rehabilitation by completing VA Form 28-1900 and submitting it to your local VA Office: Winston-Salem Regional Office, Federal Building, 251 N. Main ST, Winston – Salem, NC 27155. Once the application is filed, an appointment will be scheduled for you to discuss your educational plans, test your aptitude, interests and abilities as well as review the nature of your disability and how it affects your ability to gain employment. A decision of your entitlement to the benefit will be rendered after the counseling appointment. If you need further information, please contact the office directly at 1-800-827-1000.
You should use VONAPP if you are a U.S. military veteran, a service member on active duty, a member of the Selected Reserve, a spouse/dependent of a "service connected" disabled or deceased veteran, or a family member that has been approved to receive transferred benefits. If you have previously filed a claim for education benefits, use VONAPP only if you are filing for a different education benefit or if you are changing schools or programs under your current benefit program; for example, if you are eligible for two benefit programs, currently using one, but would like to begin using the other benefit program

All students who are receiving either the MGIB-AD Chapter 30 or MGIB-SR Chapter 1606/1607 MUST verify their enrollments each month in order to receive payment. Q. Will the VA pay for a dual degree / dual major?
Yes, but prior approval must be received from the North Carolina State Approving Agency (NCSAA). At this time, all dual degrees/majors must have prior approval by the NC SAA before a student can pursue a dual degree/major.
Q. Will the VA pay for a minor?
The VA will pay for a minor only if the minor can be applied as part of your major. The VA will pay for those classes that are part of the minor requirement.
Q. Can I retake a class and still be paid GI Bill benefits for that class?
If you fail a course, the grade does not meet the minimum requirements for the major or graduation, or credit was not earned may be repeated and be certified for VA purposes. Courses that are successfully completed may not be repeated and be eligible to receive VA benefits. If students must take additional courses in order to raise their GPA to graduate, the courses must be ones that have not already been successfully completed by the student.
Q. Can I get retroactive pay for classes I took before I applied for VA Education Benefits?
Yes, but there are limitations. VA benefits can be paid for enrollments up to one year before the date VA receives a student's application. The date stamp put on the student's application determines the one-year date.
Q. I have heard about "Break Pay." What is Break Pay and do I qualify?
Break (Interval) pay between semesters, quarters, and terms is paid according to the rules outlined below. Breaks are paid at the rate paid on the ending date of the term preceding the break. VA pays breaks automatically unless one of the following restrictions precludes payment for the break.
Restrictions on Break Pay. The VA will not pay for the break if:
- The break is more than 8 weeks.
- The term before or after the break is shorter than the break.
- Training time the last day of the preceding semester, quarter, or term is less than 1/2-time.
- The student withdrew from all courses during the preceding semester, or Summer term.
- The student's entitlement will exhaust and not paying the break is to the student's advantage.
- The student requests no pay for a break before payment for the break is authorized.
- The student is on active duty.
Q. What is the VA payment rate for Summer classes?
The VA pays education benefits for nonstandard enrollment periods based on credit equivalents. The school will report the actual number of credits and the beginning and ending dates of the nonstandard term.
Q. Why does WAVE show my enrollment as only 12 credits when I log in to verify, when I am actually enrolled for more than that?
The VA considers 12 semester credits to be full-time enrollment. If you are enrolled for more than 12 credits during the Spring or Fall semester, the VA will only pay you for up to 12 full-time credits.
