The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Mount Olive (0-1-0) had four shots, including three on goal, in the first 13 minutes of the match. But the Trojans were held without a shot until Stanley’s penalty kick after a foul in the box with 82 seconds left before halftime.

The Trojan defense kept UNC Pembroke (1-0-0) scoreless for more than 70 minutes before the Braves started their comeback. A through ball led to a one-on-one for Anna Svenson to tie the match 1-1 at the 70:57 mark. UNC Pembroke took the lead for good barely four minutes later on Rebecca Womack’s goal at 75:01. Svenson added an insurance goal on another breakaway at 83:58.

Trojan goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre recorded five saves, while Brittney Bennett finished with four saves for UNC Pembroke. Mount Olive was outshot 22-10.

Mount Olive heads to Montreat, N.C., this weekend to compete in the Montreat College Tournament. The Trojans take on Oklahoma Baptist Saturday at 10 a.m., then face Truett McConnell (Ga.) Sunday at 11 a.m.

Workin' It: Newspaper Reporter Becomes Trojan Volleyball Recruit For A Day

Goldsboro News-Argus reporter Laura Collins (center, with volleyball) got a first-hand look at what a volleyball recruit experiences during a tryout. Ms. Collins writes a column for the News-Argus called "Workin' It." She tries her hand at various jobs in Wayne County, then writes about her experiences. She participated in a practice and learned what a recruit goes through to try to earn an athletics scholarship. She also gained insight into how coaches conduct practices. Ms. Collins' column appeared in Monday's edition of the News-Argus.

Trojans Picked Third In Conference Carolinas Preseason Men's Cross Country Poll Conference Carolinas Preseason Men's Cross Country Poll

Mount Olive has been picked third in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Men’s Cross Country Poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The preseason ranking is the highest for the Trojans since 2002.

Mount Olive returns nine runners from last year, including the Trojans’ top five finishers at the 2009 Conference Carolinas Championship and the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Mount Olive finished fourth at the conference championship and 10th at the regional. The Trojans were ranked as high as No. 9 in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Poll.

Kerry “Bear” Maloney finished 13th out of 82 runners in the 2009 Conference Carolinas Championship and earned All-Conference Carolinas third team honors. Maloney notched three top five finishes in 2009 and finished 10th out of 75 non-Division I runners at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational. Paul Hoffman recorded three top 10 finishes last year and Kevin Ryan had two top 10’s. Ronnie Sturgill and Chris Menjares rounded out the Trojans’ top five at the conference and regional championships. All five runners are juniors this year.

Mount Olive received 55 points in the poll to finish four points ahead of fourth-place Erskine. Defending conference champion Queens received nine first-place votes and was picked first in the poll. Second-place Lees-McRae received the remaining first-place vote.

The Trojans have five regular season meets scheduled this year, including the second annual Mount Olive College Invitational October 22 on the MOC campus. Mount Olive will be one of nine teams competing. The Trojans will also travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to compete in the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Men’s Cross Country Championship is slated for November 5 at Charlotte, N.C.

Mount Olive plays host to the inaugural Green and White/Alumni Meet Friday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. on the MOC campus. The Trojans open regular season competition September 18 in the Winthrop University Invitational at Rock Hill, S.C.

Mount Olive has been picked eighth in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Women’s Cross Country Poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The Trojans play host to the inaugural Green and White/Alumni Meet Friday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. on the Mount Olive College campus.

Mount Olive returns five runners from last year and boasts its largest roster in school history with the addition of 10 freshmen. Returning juniors Rocio Alvarado, Nikolette Lucas and Caitlin Pye were among the Trojans’ top five finishers at last year’s Conference Carolinas Championship. Lucas also competed in the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

Mount Olive received 40 points in the poll to finish three points behind seventh-place Erskine and three points ahead of Barton and Coker, which tied for ninth place. Defending conference champion Queens received eight first-place votes and was picked first in the poll. Second-place Lees-McRae received two first-place votes and fourth-place Converse received the remaining first-place vote.

The Trojans have five regular season meets scheduled this year, including the second annual Mount Olive College Invitational October 22 on the MOC campus. Trojans Picked Fourth In 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Women's Volleyball Poll 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll

Mount Olive has been picked fourth in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Women’s Volleyball Poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The Trojans compete in the Green and White Game Tuesday at Kornegay Arena and begin regular season action next weekend.

Mount Olive returns two starters from last year’s squad, which posted a 13-19 record overall and tied for fourth in the conference standings with a 12-6 mark. The Trojans won 11 of 13 matches midway through the season to overcome a 1-12 start last year.

Senior Kailey Preece was second on the team in blocks last year third on the team in service aces. The six-footer will see time as an outside hitter and an opposite side hitter this season. Brooke Norris, a 5-8 sophomore, took over the starting libero position midway through the 2009 season. Mount Olive will also get the services of 5-9 outside hitter Tiffany Hight, who redshirted last year after transferring from University of Dubuque (Iowa), where she played for Trojan head coach Cole Tallman.

Mount Olive received 51 points in the poll to finish two points ahead of fifth-place Erskine and 12 points behind third-place Limestone. Defending conference champion Lees-McRae received seven first-place votes and was picked first in the poll. Second-place Pfeiffer received the remaining three first-place votes.

The Trojans will play each conference member home-and-away for a total of 18 conference matches. All of Mount Olive’s non-conference matches will take place in three tournaments, including two hosted by the Trojans. The tournaments mark the first hosted by Mount Olive since the 2002 season. The Mount Olive College Invitational in September is a five-team round-robin tournament and the Mount Olive College Classic in October is a four-team round-robin tournament. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for November 9-14.

Mount Olive travels to Anderson, S.C., to compete in the Anderson University Women’s Volleyball Invitational. The Trojans take on Augusta State and Virginia State on the first day, then close out the tournament against Southern Wesleyan and Lincoln Memorial.

Mount Olive has been picked sixth in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Women’s Soccer Poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The Trojans came within three points of finishing among the top four in the poll. Mount Olive kicks off its 2010 regular season next week.

Mount Olive returns eight starters from last year’s squad, including three All-Conference Carolinas selections. Junior Caroline Smith became a two-time all-conference selection, while sophomores Patrice Clarke and Tia Rose also earned all-conference honors. The Trojans posted an overall record of 6-10-4 and finished eighth in the Conference Carolinas standings with a 3-5-3 mark.

Mount Olive received 60 points in the poll to finish three points behind fourth-place Limestone and two points behind fifth-place Erskine. Defending conference champion Belmont Abbey received eight first-place votes and finished first in the poll. Second-place Pfeiffer picked up two first-place votes and third-place Queens garnered the remaining first-place vote.

The Trojans’ 18-match regular season schedule includes 10 contests against Conference Carolinas opponents. Mount Olive also faces regional powers Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial and UNC Pembroke, as well as future Conference Carolinas member North Greenville. Mount Olive travels to Montreat, N.C., Labor Day Weekend for matches against Oklahoma Baptist and Truett McConnell (Ga.). The Trojans are at home for their final five regular season matches. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Tournament gets underway November 1.

Mount Olive opens its season September 2 as the Trojans travel to Pembroke, N.C., to take on UNC Pembroke in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 4:30 p.m.

Mount Olive has been picked seventh in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Preseason Soccer Poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The Trojans kick off their 2010 regular season next week.

Mount Olive returns six starters from last year’s squad, which posted an overall record of 6-10-1 and finished seventh in the conference with a 3-7-1 mark. The Trojans ended the regular season on a high note, a 1-0 win on the road at Erskine and a 1-1 tie against nationally 13th-ranked Anderson. Mount Olive had a 5-2-1 record at home in 2009.

Among the returning players are the Trojans’ top three scorers from last year. Scott Mitchell (six goals), Matt Cargile (four goals) and Ramon Gallardo (four goals) combined for more than half of Mount Olive’s goals last year. Gallardo tied for second on the team in assists with four. Murilo Pelegrino, who led the Trojans with five assists last season, also returns.

Mount Olive received 36 points in the poll to finish three points behind sixth-place Queens and 10 points ahead of eighth-place Erskine. Defending conference champion and 2009 NCAA Division II national runner-up Lees-McRae received eight of 10 first-place votes to finish first in the poll. Second-place Limestone picked up the remaining two first-place votes.

The Trojans’ 17-match regular season schedule includes nine contests against Conference Carolinas opponents. Mount Olive also faces regional powers Catawba, Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke, along with future conference member North Greenville. The Trojans will also have a rare home-and-away series against regional foe Chowan. The Trojans are at home for their final five regular season matches. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Tournament gets underway November 2.
