Trojans Stay At No. 1 In Baseball Top 30 Poll Mount Olive received all the first-place votes to remain at No. 1 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 Poll, it was announced Monday. The Trojans have been ranked No. 1 in nine of the last 10 weeks, including four weeks in a row.
Mount Olive (49-5 overall) capped a 5-0 week by matching a school record for most wins in a season. The Trojans equaled last year’s total of 49 wins. Mount Olive took the first two games of a scheduled three-game series against regionally eighth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State, but was denied an opportunity for win No. 50 when Sunday’s final game was rained out.
The Trojans outscored their opponents 41-1 in five games last week, posting four consecutive shutouts before allowing a run in a 6-1 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State in the final game of the week. Trojan pitchers tossed 34 consecutive scoreless innings and have allowed only one run in their last 43 innings for a 0.21 earned run average. Mount Olive’s 3.05 team ERA is among the 10 lowest in the nation.
Mount Olive received 480 points in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 to finish 18 points ahead of No. 2 Delta State (Miss.), which jumped three spots to No. 2 after sweeping a doubleheader against previously third-ranked Southern Arkansas. Tampa (Fla.) held at No. 3, while Abilene Christian (Texas) leaped six places to No. 4. Sonoma State (Calif.) is at No. 5, followed by Emporia State (Kan.), which had its 35-game winning streak snapped with three straight losses. Southern Arkansas fell to No. 7. The Ping Baseball Top 30 and NCBWA Top 25 have not yet been announced.
Mount Olive, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA II South Atlantic Region Poll, has clinched its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and awaits word if it will host the South Atlantic Regional for the second year in a row. The regional takes place May 15-18 with the winner advancing to the National Finals in Sauget, Ill., May 24-31.
With more than two weeks remaining before the NCAA Tournament, there is a possibility that Mount Olive will schedule scrimmages or additional regular season contests prior to the regional.
