Trojans Defeat Grand Canyon 3-0
Noel Garcia notched a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs as Mount Olive defeated Grand Canyon 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 in day one of the Lees-McRae/King College Men’s Volleyball Classic Friday at Banner Elk, N.C. Pedro Penate added 11 kills, while Jose Lanier finished with 10 kills.
Mount Olive (6-3) trailed 17-16 in the first set, but capitalized on Grand Canyon errors on four consecutive points to take the lead for good. A kill by Garcia followed by a block by Garcia and Mike Carroll highlighted an 8-2 run to give the Trojans a 24-19 lead. Grand Canyon got as close as two points, but Lanier served an ace on set point.
In the second set, Mount Olive broke away from a 13-13 tie as Penate’s kill capped an 8-3 run and gave the Trojans their biggest lead. Grand Canyon closed within 24-23, but Carroll sparked a Trojan run, again combining with Garcia on a block end recording a kill on set point.
The Trojans jumped out to a 9-6 advantage in the third set and led the remainder of the set. Mount Olive led by as many as five points and back-to-back kills by Carroll and Christiaan Rombaut closed out the match.
Carroll finished with a match-high eight blocks, while Alex Hoekstra recorded 37 assists.
Mount Olive concludes tournament play with two matches Saturday, one at each host site. The Trojans travel to Bristol, Tenn., to take on King at 1 p.m., then return to Banner Elk in the evening for a 7 p.m. match against Lees-McRae.
