Trojans Place Five On All-Conference Carolinas Softball Team
Outfielder Kat Cahoon, designated player Jenny Jackson and shortstop Kelly Minshew all earned first team honors and Mount Olive earned five all-conference selections overall as the 2009 All-Conference Carolinas Softball Team was announced Thursday at the 2009 Conference Carolinas Softball Tournament in Hartsville, S.C. Pitcher Sasha Snyder and catcher Jessica Velasquez were both named to the second team.
Cahoon, a senior from Columbia, N.C., ranks fifth in the conference with a .406 batting average and fourth with 30 runs scored. Cahoon, who is batting .419 in conference games, had a career-high 10-game hitting streak late in the season and raised her batting average 88 points during the streak. Cahoon is also 10-for-11 in stolen bases. Cahoon was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks late in the season.
Jackson, a senior from Fremont, N.C., earned all-conference first team honors for the third consecutive year. The 2007 Player of the Year, Jackson is batting .318 with five home runs. In conference play, Jackson is batting .353 with three home runs.
Minshew, a sophomore from Stantonsburg, N.C., is batting .347 with 13 doubles. She spent two weeks ranked in the top 10 in the nation in doubles per game and currently ranks 18th. Minshew has a .956 fielding percentage with only six errors in 135 chances at shortstop. She provided the game-winning hit in Trojans' regular season finale, a two-out rbi-single in the bottom of the eighth in a 3-2 win over Queens.
Snyder, a junior from Arleta, Calif., has a 4-2 record with a 2.48 earned run average, including a 2-0 mark and a 0.34 ERA in conference play. Snyder was named Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete game three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over Lees-McRae. She also retired all 15 batters she faced in relief in the Trojans' 3-2 victory over Queens.
Velasquez, a junior from Arleta, Calif., is batting .250 overall and .262 in conference play. Velasquez, who also plays first base, has a .984 fielding percentage. Mount Olive has a 7-0 record since Velasquez was moved to the leadoff spot in the batting lineup.
Both Snyder and Velasquez transferred to Mount Olive from Los Angeles Valley (Junior) College.
Mount Olive is 23-16-1 and finished second in the regular season conference standings with an 11-5 mark. The Trojans are the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament and open play Friday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Friday morning's first round game between No. 7 seed Lees-McRae and No. 10 seed Anderson.
