Trojans Defeat Belmont Abbey 3-0
Christiane Maul had 10 kills and no errors in 11 attempts for a school record .909 hitting percentage as Mount Olive maintained its conference lead with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. The win is Mount Olive’s fourth in a row as the Trojans remained the only team still unbeaten in conference play.
Mount Olive (6-12 overall, 6-0 Conference Carolinas) used aces by Racey Bartley and Caitlin Skislak to build an 11-4 lead in the first set. Belmont Abbey (2-9, 2-4) never got any closer than five points and Maul’s kill closed out the set.
The Trojans led by as many as nine points in the second before Eria James’ ace helped Belmont Abbey pull within 21-16. But kills by Kailey Preece and Alicia Mote helped Mount Olive pull away and build a two-set lead.
Mount Olive built a six-point lead in the third set, but back-to-back kills by James and a second-ball kill by setter Kay Schellenburg helped the Crusaders close to within 17-16. A side out kept the Trojans in the lead and Bartley had three kills in a match-ending 7-2 run.
Maul, who also had a match-high four blocks, broke the previous record held by three-time All-Conference middle blocker Colby Mangum. Mangum notched an .842 hitting percentage (16 kills, 0 errors, 19 attempts) October 18, 2005, against Lees-McRae.
Bartley shared match high honors with 11 kills and led all players with three aces, while Mote added 10 kills and eight digs. Joanie Werling, who ranks 21st in the nation in assists, finished with 38 assists.
James led Belmont Abbey with 11 kills, while Schellenburg finished with 30 assists.
Mount Olive is off to its best start in conference play since 2005 when the Trojans won their first 10 conference matches. Saturday’s victory comes less than 18 hours after the Trojans rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Lees-McRae and take over sole possession of the conference lead.
Last weekend, Mount Olive rallied for an emotional five-set win against Limestone Friday, then held off Converse the following day. Skislak, one of four Trojan seniors, says last weekend’s experience helped the team Saturday.
“We definitely didn’t want to have a letdown today,” said Skislak, an outside hitter from Gulf Breeze, Fla. “Last weekend, we struggled Saturday because we were still feeling the effects of the match the night before. Last night’s match took a lot out of us, but we knew we had to refocus right away and prepare for Belmont Abbey.”
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Laurinburg, N.C., for a Conference Carolinas contest against St. Andrews. Match time is 7 p.m.
