Trojans Shut Out St. Andrews 4-0
Tia Rose scored a collegiate-high two goals, while Jen Floyd and Sydney Freilinghausen added two assists apiece as Mount Olive defeated St. Andrews 4-0 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer Tuesday at Amon Field. Felicia Dracz and Sam Weiss each scored a goal as the Trojans registered their highest scoring output of the season. Goalkeepers Lyndsey McIntyre and Jenn Sastre combined for the Trojans’ fourth shutout of the season.
Mount Olive (5-6-2 overall, 3-2-1 Conference Carolinas) turned a service from its own half into a goal to break a scoreless tie midway through the first half. Cara Paxson played the ball across midfield to Sydney Frielinghausen, who flicked the ball ahead to Rose. Rose beat a defender to the right and put the ball inside the far post to put the Trojans on top 1-0 at the 17:41 mark.
St. Andrews (4-6-1, 2-3-1) came close to tying the match late in the half, but Trojan defender Savannah Kosik poked the ball away just above the top of the box to prevent a breakaway and preserve Mount Olive’s one-goal halftime lead.
Rose and Dracz scored goals less than five minutes apart early in the second half to help Mount Olive pull away. Freilinghausen played the ball to the left of the box to Floyd, who crossed the ball to Rose. Rose scored from 17 yards out in the 53rd minute.
Caroline Smith set up the Trojans’ next goal with a long service from the right sideline. Floyd one-touched the ball in the box to Dracz, who headed the ball into the back of the next to extend Mount Olive’s lead to 3-0 at the 57:34 mark. The Trojans capped the scoring in the 85th minute when Weiss won a 50-50 ball and midfield, then took Rebeccah Hecke’s service and scored from 22 yards out for her first collegiate goal.
Sam Frazer nearly put St. Andrews on the scoreboard late in the match when her corner kick bent toward the goal, but Trojan defender Patrice Clarke blocked the ball and Mount Olive was able to clear the ball out of the box.
Mount Olive outshot St. Andrews 12-3 for the match. McIntyre recorded one save in 83 minutes for the Trojans. St. Andrews goalkeeper Becca Knott finished with two saves.
“I feel like we’re coming together on offense,” said Rose, a freshman forward from Beaulavillie, N.C. Rose began the season as a defender. “This was an important win for us.”
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 2 p.m.
