Mount Olive Clinches Berth In Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament, Ties Erskine 0-0
Goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre made saves on breakaway shots on two consecutive possessions late in the second half to help Mount Olive preserve a 0-0 double overtime tie against Erskine in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Due West, S.C. The win, along with losses Saturday by Barton and St. Andrews, clinches a spot in Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Tournament for the Trojans.
After getting outshot 8-3 in the first half, Mount Olive (6-8-4 overall, 3-4-3 Conference Carolinas) was able to win possession for much of the second half before Erskine (6-9-1, 5-4-1) put together its two breakaway opportunities. Molly Harpe got past the Trojan defense in the 76th minute, but McIntyre made a diving save. Two minutes later, Harpe lined her second breakaway attempt into McIntrye, who deflected the ball, then covered.
Erskine narrowly missed scoring the game winner off a corner kick in the waning seconds of the second overtime. A scramble ensued in the Trojan box before an Erskine header attempt went off the top of the crossbar and over the goal.
McIntyre finished with seven saves on her way to her fifth shutout of the season, including three in overtime. Erskine goalkeeper Si’Ara Washington finished with three saves. Erskine outshot Mount Olive 12-5.
