Trojans Defeat Coker 3-1 In Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball
Racey Bartley recorded a match-high 21 kills as Mount Olive held off Coker 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Tuesday at Hartsville, S.C. The match was the first for the Trojans since October 15. Tuesday’s win, coupled with Lees-McRae’s win at Pfeiffer, moves the Trojans within one game of first place in the conference standings.
Mount Olive (12-14 overall, 11-2 Conference Carolinas) overcame a 4-0 deficit in the first set after back-to-back aces by Alicia Mote highlighted a run of five unanswered points. But Coker (3-23, 1-12) capitalized on a pair of Trojan attack errors to regain the lead and never trailed again in the set. After Mount Olive rallied from a three-point deficit to tie the set 17-17, Cynallyhia Indriago’s kill put Coker ahead to stay.
In the second set, a pair of kills by Bartley and Joanie Werling’s service ace helped Mount Olive jump out to an 8-1 lead. Coker pulled within 10-8, but kills by Mote and Christiane Maul sparked a 5-0 Trojan run. Bartley’s block gave Mount Olive its biggest lead at 21-11 and the Trojans withstood a late rally to even the match at one set apiece.
Mount Olive turned an 11-11 tie in the third set into a 16-11 lead after a pair of kills by Bartley and a block by Bartley and Werling. The Trojans extended the lead to 21-15, but back-to-back aces by Molly Bookhart sparked a 6-0 Coker run as the Cobras tied the set. But a pair of kills by Bartley put Mount Olive ahead to stay and Werling notched a kill on set point.
The Trojans led by as many as three points in the fourth set before Bookhart’s third ace of the match put Coker on top 18-17. The set was tied 22-22 when Kailey Preece’s kill gave Mount Olive the lead for good. Coker fought off one match point before Bartley’s kill sealed the win.
Bartley, who ranks 40th in the nation in kills, shared match-high honors with four blocks and was among four Trojans with two service aces. Mote notched her third consecutive double-double and eighth in her last 12 matches with 12 kills and 12 digs. Maul added 12 digs, while Caitlin Skislak came within range of a double-double with eight kills and nine digs. Werling, who ranks first in the conference and 20th in the nation in assists, finished with 49 assists.
Kristin Teets led Coker with 13 kills, while Bookhart added 15 assists and four blocks. Abby Frame had 17 assists for the Cobras and Abby Frame had a match-high four aces to go with 11 digs.
Mount Olive stays on the road this weekend for a pair of Conference Carolinas matches. In a match that could determine the regular season conference championship and the No. 1 seed in next month’s conference tournament, Mount Olive travels to Banner Elk, N.C., Friday at 7 p.m. to take on current conference leader Lees-McRae. The Trojans then head to Belmont, N.C., Saturday at 2 p.m. to face Belmont Abbey.
