Trojans Fall To Lees-McRae 3-0 In Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball
Mount Olive's bid to move into a first-place tie in the conference standings came up short as the Trojans' fell to conference leader Lees-McRae 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Banner Elk, N.C. Christiane Maul shared match-high honors with nine kills.
Mount Olive (12-15 overall, 11-3 Conference Carolinas) entered the match one game behind Lees-McRae and percentage points ahead of Pfeiffer. Mount Olive rallied from a two-set deficit for a five-set win over Lees-McRae September 25 at Kornegay Arena, but the Trojans were unable to pull off another comeback Friday.
Alicia Mote's kill pulled Mount Olive within 20-17 after the Trojans had trailed by as many as five points in the first set. But Lees-McRae (22-5, 13-1) won five of the final six points to close out the set.
In the second set, Lees-McRae broke away from an 8-7 lead to build an eight-point advantage and go on to take a two-set lead. In the third set, Mount Olive narrowed an early five-point deficit down to two after Racey Bartley's kill pulled the Trojans within 12-10. But Lees-McRae scored the next three points and Mount Olive never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Joanie Werling finished with 24 assists for Mount Olive. Maul, Kailey Preece and Caitlin Skislak had two blocks apiece for the Trojans.
Whitney Justice had nine kills for Lees-McRae, while Luana Rocha led the Bobcats defensively with a match-high 12 kills.
Mount Olive plays its final road match of the regular season as the Trojans head to Belmont, N.C., Saturday to take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match-up. The Trojans won the first meeting in three sets September 26 at Kornegay Arena. Match time is 2 p.m.
