Mount Olive Falls To Limestone 3-0 In First Round Of Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament
In the first round of the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament (now Conference Carolinas), No. 7 seed Mount Olive was outshot 11-1 but the Trojans were able to upset second-seeded Belmont Abbey 1-0. While Mount Olive did not have the same fortune Tuesday against Limestone, the statistics won’t show how close the Trojans came to tying the match in the second half.
Seventh-seeded Mount Olive fell to No. 2 seed Limestone 3-0 in the first round of the 2009 Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Gaffney, S.C. With the loss, the Trojans end their season with a record of 6-10-1.
Mount Olive was outshot 12-0 in the first half, but the Trojans stayed within striking range, down only 2-0 at halftime. A counter attack almost put Mount Olive on the board in the 52nd minute as Scott Mitchell’s service from just inside midfield set up Matt Cargile with a shot from the top of the box. Cargile got Limestone goalkeeper Mark Davidson leaning the wrong way, but Davidson recovered in time to make the save.
Cargile created a breakaway opportunity in the 68th minute, but Davidson deflected the shot and a Limestone defender cleared the ball over the end line to set up a Trojan corner kick. Mount Olive was unable to convert and the Trojans did not get another shot the remainder of the match.
“He (Davidson) made two great saves on two very good shots,” said Trojan head coach Jerry Riggs. “Limestone was dominating, but if not for those two saves, it’s a 2-2 game. The first one especially would have been nice. Would have given us a little energy, a little life.”
Headers by Liam Garner in the 14th minute and the 25th minute accounted for both Limestone goals in the first half. Keegan Ziada’s goal in the 72nd minute capped the scoring. Limestone (13-4-0) finished with a 27-3 shot advantage.
Trojan goalkeeper Jamie Carano recorded seven saves in 82 minutes. Zac Scott played the final eight minutes in goal and had one save. Davidson finished with three saves.
The match marked the career finale for Trojan seniors Angelo Acquah and Adrian Daniels.
Mount Olive was on the verge of being eliminated from playoff contention with one week left in the season, but the Trojans defeated Erskine 1-0 and tied nationally 13th-ranked Anderson 1-1 to close out the regular season and clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
“We played very strong the last two weeks,” said Riggs. “Our guys have nothing to hold their heads down about. We had a tough day today against a very good team. But we turned it around at the end of the season and I’m proud of our guys’ effort.”
