Trojans Place Three On 2009 All-Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Team
Three Mount Olive College women’s soccer players earned all-conference honors as freshmen Patrice Clarke and Tia Rose, and sophomore Caroline Smith were named to the 2009 All-Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Third Team, as voted on by the conference head women’s soccer coaches. The selections mark the sixth consecutive year the Trojans have had at least three players on the all-conference women’s soccer team.
Clarke, a defender from Jacksonville, N.C. (White Oak HS) played in all 20 matches this season, starting in 14. Frequently assigned to mark the opponent’s top attacker, Clarke helped Mount Olive’s defense rank fourth in the conference in fewest goals allowed per match. The Trojans posted four of their six shutouts in 2009 against conference opponents, including a pair of 110-minute double overtime shutouts. Clarke was in the starting lineup for
eight of Mount Olive’s 11 conference matches.
Rose, a forward from Beaulaville, N.C. (East Duplin High School), led the Trojans with six goals and 12 points this season. Rose scored two goals in a 4-0 win over St. Andrews and also scored a goal against regular season conference champion Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Tournament. Her goal in the 55th minute of Mount Olive’s 3-2 conference-opening win over Coker proved to be the game winner. Rose, who started in 16 of 19 matches, began the season as a defender, but moved to the forward position for the Trojans’ final 15 matches.
Smith, a defender from Lumberton, N.C. (Lumberton Senior HS), becomes a two-time All-Conference Carolinas selection after earning third
team honors in 2008. Smith, who started all 20 matches as a freshman, started the first 18 matches this year before an ankle injury sidelined her for the final two contests. Along with being a part of a Trojan defense that posted a 1.05 goals against average, Smith also contributed to the offense with two assists during the season. Smith’s long-range service from midfield led to a goal just 88 seconds into Mount Olive’s 2-2 tie with second place Pfeiffer.
Belmont Abbey forward Connie Axiotis was named Conference Player of the Year, while Queens forward Kristen Wright was selected as Freshman of the Year. Lees-McRae head coach Renee Lopez won Coach of the Year honors.
Mount Olive posted a record of 6-10-4 overall and finished eighth in the conference standings with a 3-5-3 mark. All five conference losses were by one goal. The Trojans’ season ended Monday with a 3-1 loss to Belmont Abbey in the first round of the conference tournament.
