Mount Olive Falls To Limestone 3-0 In Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball
Mount Olive fell to Limestone 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. Alexandra Simon led the Trojans defensively with a career-high 10 digs, while Brooke Norris added a career-high nine digs. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Trojans, while Limestone extended its winning streak to six.
Mount Olive (12-18 overall, 11-6 Conference Carolinas) entered the final weekend of the regular season in a three-way tie for third place with Limestone and Anderson in the conference standings. The Trojans are now a game behind Limestone in a fourth-place tie with Anderson, which fell to Lees-McRae Friday. Mount Olive split its two contests with Limestone, but lost in its only meeting with Anderson. The top four teams in the final regular season standings host first round matches in the 2009 Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Tournament, which gets underway Tuesday.
The Trojans sliced a 12-5 deficit down to three in the first set before Limestone (18-14, 12-5) broke away to build the lead to as many as nine points. Chelsea Anthony had six of her 11 kills in the first set for the Saints.
Mount Olive built an early three-point lead in the second set after back-to-back aces by Christiane Maul, who had three of her match-high four aces in the set. There were 15 ties and eight lead changes in the set as Maul’s third ace of the set helped the Trojans take a 19-17 advantage. But Limestone capitalized on a pair of Trojan attack errors to break a 22-22 tie and score the final three points of the set.
Limestone scored the first four points of the third set and led by as many as five points before Alicia Mote’s kill capped a Trojan comeback to tie the set 16-16. But Limestone took the lead for good with a 6-1 run as the Saints closed out the match.
Caitlin Skislak had a team-high nine kills for Mount Olive, while Mote and Racey Bartley added eight kills apiece. Mote added nine digs to come within two kills and a dig of her ninth double-double of the season. Joanie Werling recorded 34 assists.
Melissa Thomas led all players with 13 kills for Limestone, while Dani Siebert finished with 36 assists and two aces. Brooke England had a match-high 14 digs and Anthony added nine digs and two aces.
Mount Olive concludes its regular season Saturday as the Trojans play host to Converse in Conference Carolinas action. To clinch a top four seed and a home match in the first round of the conference tournament, the Trojans will need to win, then await the results of Limestone’s match at Barton and Anderson’s match at home against Belmont Abbey.
Saturday’s match will also be Mount Olive’s Senior Day as seniors Racey Bartley, Alicia Mote, Caitlin Skislak and Joanie Werling will be recognized prior to the match. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
