Trojans Win Three NCAA II Baseball Statistical National Championships
The Mount Olive College baseball team finished first in the nation in three statistical categories in 2010 and will be awarded NCAA Division II Statistical National Championship trophies, it was announced by the NCAA. The Trojans led the nation in team batting average, slugging percentage and runs per game in the year-end statistics.
In addition to leading the nation in 2010, Mount Olive’s .387 team batting average is the sixth highest single-season batting average in NCAA Division II baseball history. The Trojans averaged 11.3 runs per game this season, which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Division II. The Trojans’ .627 slugging percentage is tied for the seventh highest.
Mount Olive also ranked in the top five this season in several other team and individual statistical categories. As a team, the Trojans finished second in home runs, fourth in doubles and fifth in won-lost percentage. Individually, Mike Knox finished second with 94 runs batted in, third with 10 sacrifice flies and fourth with 24 home runs. Bobby Leeper ranked fourth with 1.61 runs scored per game.
Mount Olive posted a record of 41-11 in 2010 and finished first in the Conference Carolinas standings with an 18-6 mark. The Trojans won their fourth Conference Carolinas Tournament championship in the last five years and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship for the fourth time in the last five years and ninth time overall.
