Trojans Win Three NCAA Men's Volleyball Statistical National Championships
Mount Olive men’s volleyball student-athlete Jose Lanier led the nation in service aces and the Trojans finished first in the nation in two team statistical categories in 2010, it was announced by the NCAA. Lanier and the Trojans will be awarded NCAA Division I Men’s Volleyball Statistical National Championship trophies. Mount Olive ranked first in team service aces and won-lost percentage.
Lanier, a 6-6 middle blocker from Cienfuegos, Cuba, averaged 0.58 aces per set this season. Lanier also ranked third in the nation with 1.58 blocks per set and was among three Trojan players to finish in the top three in at least one statistical category. Camilo Guerci’s .484 hitting percentage was the second highest in the nation, while Alex Hoekstra ranked third in the nation with 13.80 assists per set.
As a team, Mount Olive averaged 1.89 aces per set to place ahead of Division I powers such as Penn State and UC Irvine, as well as 2010 national champion Stanford.
Mount Olive finished with an overall record of 17-4 for an .810 winning percentage. The Trojans captured both the inaugural Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball regular season and tournament titles, posting a 6-2 conference record and defeating Lees-McRae in four sets in the conference tournament championship match.
