Monti Van Brunt Named Mount Olive Assistant Softball Coach
Monti Van Brunt has been named assistant softball coach at Mount Olive College, it was announced by Trojan head coach Jaime Kylis. Van Brunt begins his duties in August.
Van Brunt has spent the past six years coaching softball and baseball at the international level. Van Brunt is currently head baseball coach of the Tex Town Tigers Club in The Netherlands and has also served as the club’s Under-19 head softball coach. He was named the 2008 Dutch Federation Softball Coach of the Year after leading Tex Town Tigers to the Dutch League Championship with a 35-7 record. Van Brunt coached players who earned Dutch League Best Hitter, Best Pitcher and MVP awards in 2008 and 2007, including Best Hitter of the 2007 European Championship and 2007 ISF (International Softball Federation) Junior World Championship.
Van Brunt was also a part of the coaching staff of China’s National Softball Team, serving as a consultant to the head coach in 2004 and as hitting coach and bench coach in 2006. China placed fourth at the 2004 Summer Olympics and fourth in the 2006 ISF World Championship.
Van Brunt, who also spent a year as head softball coach of BSC Legnano in Italy, will serve as hitting coach at Mount Olive and will also assist with defensive work, specializing in the infield.
“I’m excited to have Monti join the Trojan softball staff,” said Kylis, who just completed her eighth season at Mount Olive. “His knowledge and expertise in hitting will definitely be a plus for our program and hopefully assist in getting our power numbers back up. With the addition of the big swingers we are bringing in, I’m excited to have him start working with all our hitters to bring their level of play up a notch.”
Kylis added, “Monti will also help us spread the word internationally with recruiting. He has an abundance of international contacts as well as contacts from around the country and I look forward to expanding our base of student-athletes.”
Kylis also announced that Allison Czerski will serve as a student assistant coach. Czerski became the Trojans' starting third baseman late in her freshman year and remained the starter throughout her collegiate career. Czerski was named the 2009-10 Mount Olive College Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Mount Olive posted a record of 23-29 in 2010 and finished fifth in the Conference Carolinas standings with an 11-8 mark. The Trojans return three pitchers and eight position starters from this past season, including five All-Conference Carolinas selections.
