Associate of Science Degree in Health Science

Through an articulation agreement between Mount Olive College and Watts School of Nursing, a student can graduate with an associate of science degree from Mount Olive College and complete the nursing requirements at Watts School of Nursing to apply for the NCLEX exam for licensure as a registered nurse.  The agreement provides students with instruction from two academic institutions, a liberal arts college and the oldest nursing program in the state of North Carolina.  Students will complete the general education requirements at Mount Olive College and the nursing requirements at Watts School of Nursing.  Classes for the general education requirements are held at both the Mount Olive College Research Triangle Park campus and the Watts campus, while all nursing requirements are held at the Watts School of Nursing.

The goals of the program are to provide future nurses with academically and culturally enriched experiences which increase their ability to communicate effectively with clients and health care professionals, develop the clinical knowledge and skills to administer direct quality health care in a variety of settings, prepare them to become life-long learners, and prepare them to continue formal study.

To qualify for the associate of science degree, a student must make application to and be accepted for admission into the Watts School of Nursing.  Admission information is available on the Watts School of Nursing website at wattsschoolofnursing.org.

The Cooperative Teacher Education Program

A Partnership

Through the Cooperative Teacher Education Program, a partnership between Mount Olive College and East Carolina University, a student can graduate with a baccalaureate degree from Mount Olive College and receive recommendation for teacher licensure through the East Carolina University College of Education.  Through the partnership, a student receives instruction in two academic environments, a liberal arts college and a university college of education.  A personal advisor at Mount Olive College works with each student from admission to graduation to ensure a supportive learning environment, to plan a program of study and enrichment, and to provide liaison with East Carolina University.

Program Goals

The goals of the program are to provide prospective teachers with academically and culturally enriched experiences and mentoring relationships; to develop student understanding of the role of education in society; and to instill in students a desire for service, a professional attitude, a love of learning, and high standards of performance as a way of life and work.

Application, Advisement, Eligibility, Continuation in the COTEP Program

Acceptance into and continuation in the Cooperative Teacher Education Program require that a student do the following things:

Scholarship

The Braswell Teaching Scholarship, funded by the Jessie Dail and Walter Vernon Braswell Scholarship Endowment, provides a $26,000 scholarship ($6,500 renewable annually, up to three years) that is available to students who meet the following criteria, as an entering freshman:

The scholarship is renewable for three years if the recipient continues to major in teacher education; achieves at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average as a freshman and at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average as a sophomore, junior, and senior, with no failing grade at any time; completes at least 30 semester hours each academic year; and participates in the activities of the teacher education program, including active membership in the Prospective Teachers Association. The Teacher Education Committee, which screens applicants and selects Braswell Scholarship recipients, reviews the performance of Braswell Scholars at the end of each academic year and makes recommendations regarding renewal of funding. Application for a Braswell Teaching Scholarship can be initiated in the School of Professional Studies or in the Office of Admissions at the Mount Olive location.

The Louise Edgerton Preparatory Senior Teacher Award

The Edgerton award is given in memory of Louise Edgerton to honor her eighteen years as a trustee of Mount Olive College, her forty years as a public school teacher, and her outstanding Christian life.  The $1,000 award, given by Ms. Edgerton’s cousin, Dr. Thomas R. Morris, is presented at the annual College Awards Day to a senior education major selected by the Teacher Education Committee for academic excellence and promise as a prospective teacher.

Teacher Education Curriculum
