New Google Apps at MOC
In an effort to improve IT services available to students, Mount Olive College will be moving all student e-mail to Google Apps on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Please read below for more information.
***PLEASE NOTE: ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2010 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WILL RESET ALL STUDENT PASSWORDS TO THEIR DEFALUT VALUES. THIS CHANGE WILL OCCUR AFTER 10:00 PM DURING OUR NORMAL NETWORK MAINTENANCE WINDOW***
So, your password will be: MOC_xxxxxx, where xxxxxx is the last 6 digits of your student ID number.
For example: Student ID # 0006123456 would have a password of MOC_123456.
This change will affect student e-mail and Moodle.

From a student perspective:
Why are we moving e-mail to Google?
- 7+ GB of e-mail storage per account
- Google Apps is fast, secure, and stable
- World class spam and virus protection
- Integrated communication features that include e-mail, chat, and scheduling
- Mobile Access to e-mail and applications
- MOC-centered collaborative tools
- Keep the same moc.edu e-mail address
What about my data? Is it safe? Isn’t Google just going to sell my information to make themselves richer?
- Google will never sell your data.
- You will not see advertisements in your MOC Google Apps account like you do in a regular Gmail account.
- Your e-mail is your data. Google doesn’t own it, you do.
- All communication is encrypted whenever using web-based e-mail, web-based chat, web-based calendar, docs, and sites. The Google Talk Desktop Client is not encrypted.
- Also, if you sync your e-mail or calendar with other devices, such as cell phones, that material may not be encrypted either.
- All e-mail is filtered for spam, viruses, and to prevent phishing attacks.
Will faculty and staff have Google Apps accounts?
- Currently, Google Apps at MOC will be limited to students only.
When will the Google Apps transition take place?
- Due to a large number of schools scheduled to make the switch to Google Apps beginning on July 1, MOC will be migrating on June 29th. The migration also has to be done
by this Fall to accomodate the return of traditional students and the start of the fall semester.
From a business perspective:
Why are we moving student e-mail to Google?
- Provides nearly 150x more e-mail storage capacity per student
- Reduces our storage and backup burden substantially
- Google has proven that it is fast, secure, and stable enough to provide a user experience that is at the same level as that of MOC's e-mail service for students
- Provides collaborative tools and modern e-mailing/communication systems at a substantial cost savings as to what could be produced on a similar campus
implementation
- Frees up IT personnel to innovate for campus rather than maintaining legacy communication systems
- Students will maintain their e-mail address (only the access point and interface changes)
What about the students' data? Is it safe? Isn’t Google just going to sell their information to make themselves richer?
- All employee e-mail belongs to MOC, while student e-mail is the property of the individual user. Google will
never sell nor access their data without MOC IT's consent.
- Students will not see advertisements in their Google Apps @ MOC account like they do in a regular Gmail account.
- Secure (SSL) connections are available and enabled for e-mail, web-based chat, calendar, docs, and sites (SSL is not available for the Google Talk desktop client, Google Video for Business, or Google Apps Start Page).
- All student e-mail is automatically filtered for spam, viruses, and to prevent phishing attacks. This is performed on Google's servers which greatly reduces the college's security and spam burden.
