Newly Formed Chamber Choir to Focus on Vocal Excellence

MOUNT OLIVE - Mount Olive College has long had a fine tradition of music performance in its choral ensembles.  The addition of the Mount Olive College Chamber Choir this fall promises to build on that reputation.  Focused on the highest level of vocal excellence the Chamber Choir will embrace a diverse repertoire of literature such as master choral works, early cantatas, and madrigals, (a type of secular vocal music composition, written during the Renaissance and early Baroque eras).

According to Dr. Melanie Crump, director, the group previously known as the Mount Olive College Singers has been retired and in its place is the newly formed Chamber Choir.

“The Chamber Choir is in essence the choral equivalent of a chamber ensemble, using voices instead of instruments,” said Dr. Crump.

Performing both a cappella and accompanied pieces, the group is flexible to perform in a variety of venues.

“I am very excited about the direction of the group,” said Dr. Melanie Crump, director.  “The Chamber Choir continues to show its flexibility as we venture into new genres of choral music, a rewarding task when you are working with many of the top voices on campus.  I anticipate the reputation of the group to grow and expect it will quickly be in high demand for concerts, recitals and guest performances.”

The Chamber Choir has already performed at several College Dinners this fall and will have four featured songs in the upcoming Choir Concert scheduled for December 1 at First Baptist Church in Mount Olive.  The group will present a formal concert in the spring.
