“Mount Olive College students bring an enormous pool of idealism and energy with them to their volunteer efforts,” stated Dr. Philip P. Kerstetter, president of Mount Olive College.  “It is an honor to be recognized for this service by the Presidential Honor Roll, but the real reward is the positive learning experience for our students by providing opportunities for them to witness and understand how their efforts have affected the lives of others.”

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

During the 2008-2009 academic year Mount Olive College students volunteered more than 29,000 hours to various service projects including: Coats for Kids, Habitat for Humanity, Epic Journey, Go Green Project, Wayne County Special Olympics, Operation Christmas Child, March of Dimes, Humane Society, Salvation Army, Adopt A Highway, Read to Succeed, and many others.  In return for their service, students are learning valuable life lessons in teamwork and community service awareness.

The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation, in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is presented during the annual conference of the American Council on Education.

“Congratulations to the awardees and students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick Corvington, the Corporation's CEO. “Our nation's students are a critical part of the equation and vital to our efforts to tackle the most persistent challenges we face. They have achieved impactful results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a program that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of higher education and community-based organizations. SureFire to Perform at Mount Olive College on March 20 MOUNT OLIVE—The Mount Olive College Recital Series presents SureFire on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 7:30 PM in Southern Bank Auditorium.

Surefire was formed in December of 2007 and is based out of Boone, NC.  Heavily influenced by the pioneers of bluegrass music, this band provides a traditional, hard-driving experience.

Robby Norris, at age 16, provides mandolin and baritone vocals for the band.  Nineteen-year-old John Bryan plays rhythm guitar and sings tenor and high lead vocals.  Picking the banjo and singing the majority of the lead is 21-year-old Tom Isaacs.  Tim Norris plays bass for all of SureFire’s recordings and tours with the band part-time.

“SureFire is a unique musical group,” said Dr. Alan Armstrong, Music Department Chair.  “We try to have a variety of styles of music each year for the Recital Series, and we think everyone will enjoy this incredible Bluegrass ensemble.  I heard them last summer in Boone and their blended vocals and amazing instrumentals blew me away.”

Mount Olive College hosts four Recital Series concerts each year, offering a variety of artists such as concert pianists, string quartets, jazz ensembles, opera singers, and chamber music ensembles.

Opening of “Forever Free” Traveling Exhibition Quickly Approaching MOUNT OLIVE - Why did a nation founded on ideals of freedom and equality for so long tolerate one of the harshest labor systems the world has known?  A new traveling exhibition that opens March 18 at Mount Olive College’s Moye Library looks for answers to this question.  The exhibition traces Abraham Lincoln’s gradual transformation from an antislavery moderate into “The Great Emancipator,” who freed all slaves with a revolutionary war-time proclamation in 1863.  “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation” will be on display at the library until April 30.

Moye Library is one of 63 libraries in the country, and only six libraries in the state, selected to host the traveling exhibit.

“We are pleased to have been selected as a site for this exhibition,” said Cynthia Hughes, cataloging librarian.

An opening reception for the event will be held on Sunday, March 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the Library.  Period food will be served at the reception and Civil War-era music will be provided by the Mount Olive College Music Department.

“The Civil War and slavery are topics which must constantly be revisited in order to help 21st century Americans better understand their causes and more clearly see how their effects are still with us today,” stated Dr. Alan Lamm, chair of the Department of History and Social Studies.   “This exhibit offers our community an opportunity to learn more about how Abraham Lincoln decided upon emancipation of the slaves, even as he tried to hold together a fragile coalition of states in order to preserve the Union.  It is a revealing insight into the values, principles, and ideals that guided one of our greatest Presidents.”

“Forever Free” is nearly 700 feet long, and takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes to view in its entirety.  The exhibit draws upon original documents in the collections of the Huntington Library and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.  It was curated by John Rhodehamel, Norris Foundation Curator of American historical manuscripts at the Huntington Library.

Moye Library is offering free programs and other events for the public in connection with the exhibition.  Local schools and community groups are invited to tour the exhibit, but are encouraged to call in advance to schedule the visit.  Professors have volunteered to serve as guides to take groups through the display.  For more details or to schedule a visit, please call Cataloguing Librarian Cynthia Hughes at 658-4916 or 658-7869.  Moye Library is open seven days a week under regular operating hours.

Supporters of Mount Olive College Experience an Evening in Paris MOUNT OLIVE – Ooh, la la! Destination Paris! The Lois K. Murphy Regional Center at Mount Olive College was recently transformed into an enchanted city of lights for the third annual Winter Glitz.  The theme of this year’s event was “An Evening in Paris.”

Decorations were extensive; the patio resembled a French street café with wrought iron displays and flower carts.  A ten foot replica of the Eiffel Tower, made by Keith Parnell of Lucama, father of student Brian Parnell, graced the lobby.  Painted backdrops representing the skyline of Paris were stragically placed throughout the room.  Adding to the Persian ambience Photographer Willis Brown, wearing a French beret, snapped photos throughout the evening, and Student Rebeccah Hecke strolled from table-to-table entertaining guests with violin music.  Vocalist Laura Didier performed selections such as “I love Paris” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”  She was accompanied by Pianist Tom Casey, a Mount Olive College alumnus.

More than 250 guests enjoyed the evening planned and organized by the College’s Alumni Association to raise funds for student scholarships. Attendees included alumni from every decade of the College and some that traveled from as far away as Richmond, Virginia.  In addition to ticket sales, the event raised money through a silent auction.  This year’s auction featured over 140 items including a flat screen TV, golf getaway package, paintings, and much more.  The event brought in approximately $20,000.

“It was a fantastic evening,” stated Dianne B. Riley, director of Alumni Relations.  “The decorations, ambience, and entertainment, all made for an incredible evening.  I can’t say enough about the alumni that made this event happen.  They are the finest group of people you will ever meet.  They came up with the theme, the ideas for decorations and helped pull it all together.  That’s what I enjoy most about this job…working with people that care about Mount Olive College and want it to succeed enough to roll up their sleeves and help make it happen.”

Ivan Braswell from the class of 1982 was one of those alumni that volunteered his time to make the event a success.

“I am trying to give something back by volunteering,” Braswell said. “Sometimes you can’t give financially, but you can give back physically.”
Braswell’s wife, Penny, is also a Mount Olive College graduate.  The couple sat at the table with their former professor Lorelle Martin, which for them, was the highlight of the evening.

“I am so appreciative to everyone who supports this event and ultimately supports our students,” Riley concluded.
