For the fifth straight year Mount Olive College CFFA is soliciting donations from the community to supply needy children with warm winter coats. According to CFFA President Joshua Singleton, the need is greater this year than ever before.

“We plan to supply coats to 109 children at Carver Elementary School this year,” Singleton said.  “That number has increased significantly from last year.”

Freshman CFFA Officer Alaina Airheart states, “This project is important to CFFA as we look at ways to give back to our community.  The generosity of the community, both businesses and individuals, has made this effort a huge success in previous years.”

Coats will be acquired from the Coats for Kids Organization.  Hats and gloves will be provided through other donors or acquired funds. Donations received are tax deductible.  All donors are notified of the distribution date and are invited to attend.

“The look in the children’s eyes, when we distribute the coats is like Santa just arrived,” explains Singleton.

“This experience has been beneficial to the children receiving coats, but the true benefactors of the project are the participating CFFA students,” states Dr. Sandy Maddox CFFA club advisor, “This effort has become a tradition and truly builds character and a community service commitment from our students.”

If you have questions about the program or would like to make a donation please contact Dr. Maddox at 919-658-7682 for more information.

Love Medicine to be Featured Book in Marathon Reading
MOUNT OLIVE - Have you ever heard of a marathon reading? Sigma Tau Delta and the Mount Olive College English Society are planning a 24-Hour Marathon Reading for November 10, beginning at 8:00 AM in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center.

The longest recorded marathon reading lasted 224 hours and took place in Paysandú, Uruguay.  To achieve this Guinness World Record six people read aloud for nearly 10 days.  Although Mount Olive College will not attempt to break the world record, they are making history for the College by holding the very first event of its type at the institution which is being held in honor of Native American History Month.

The selected book is Love Medicine, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction.  The book is the first novel in a series by Chippewa writer Louise Erdrich.  Chronicling the lives and loves of two families--the Kashpaws and the Lamartines--from the 1930s to the 1980s, Love Medicine celebrates traditional Chippewa culture, while showing the humorous events and drama that emerge from belonging to a complex, extended family.  Set against the backdrop of a changing America, each generation faces the hardship of losing their ancestral land, or for those that stayed behind, there is the struggle to maintain ownership of it.  As Nobel-prize winning author Toni Morrison notes, “The beauty of Love Medicine saves us from being completely devastated by its power.”  Through love, humor, and lyrical prose, Erdrich presents a powerful and touching story that offers the power to heal relationships of Native and non-Native readers alike.

“I'm excited that the English Society and Sigma Tau Delta are cooperating to honor American Indian Heritage Month in such a fun and creative way,” said Dr. Dee Clere, professor of English and sponsor of Sigma Tau Delta.  “We invite anyone to come out and read for a few minutes on November 10th.”

The public is invited to attend and to participate in the reading.  For more information, contact Dr. Angela Mullis, assistant professor of Language and Literature and sponsor of the English Society, or Dee Clere at 919-658-2502.

Hines Appointed as Dean of School of Arts and Sciences MOUNT OLIVE - Mount Olive College (MOC) announced the appointment of Dr. K. David Hines as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences effective November 1.  The appointment is the culmination of a nation-wide search.

“I am delighted that Dr. Hines has accepted the position of dean,” stated President Kerstetter.  “He brings with him vast experience as a dynamic member of our faculty, as a highly successful department chair, and as a recognized leader of several campus organizations.  I know that he will be a significant addition to the College’s academic administration.”

Hines is no stranger to Mount Olive College.  He graduated from the institution in 1979 with an associate’s degree.  He then transferred to Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981.  He attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity in 1984 and his Doctor of Ministry in 1989.  Hines has been employed at Mount Olive College since 1988 and has served as chair of the Religion Department since 1994.

Over the years Hines has received several awards including the Thomas R. Morris Award for excellence in teaching at MOC in 1999; the Dean’s Merit Award for Leadership in 1986; and in 1984 he was named as an Outstanding Young Man in America.
When asked about his new role, Hines said, “I recently saw the movie Amelia, on the life of Amelia Earhart. As she described her love of flying she said, ‘No borders, only horizons.’ This is what I want for the School of Arts and Sciences – our professors and our students: No borders, only horizons!”

Having served the College for the past 15 years as chair of the Religion Department, Hines understands a great deal of the inner workings of the College.

“I have taught courses in all the formats utilized by the College and at most of the College’s locations,” he said.  “I have worked closely with the department chairs and know their good work. I hope that the Dean’s office can foster an environment of creativity and help these committed people provide even better services to our students, community, and the Church.”

Hines and his wife Teresa have one daughter, Ashley.

Scholarships Provide Support to Couple Pursuing College Degrees  MOUNT OLIVE – For Chris and Sharon Doerr of Newport, NC deciding to return to College was all about meeting challenges.  In their early 50’s with three grown children and an empty nest, the couple finally had the time to commit to earning their degrees.

Having no previous college experience and working full time, the Doerrs needed a program that offered flexibility.  They found that program at Mount Olive College in New Bern where they attend one four hour class per week.  They are working towards earning their bachelor of science degrees in business management.  They are on schedule to graduate in December of 2011.

Recognizing the Doerr’s hard work and determination the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern recently awarded the couple two $500 scholarship grants.  The church makes these grants through its Outreach Committee.  The grants are intended to offer encouragement, recognition and financial support to individuals who are well on their way to transforming their lives.

“Our degrees will make both of us more marketable and with the challenging economy and employment circumstances as they are today, that is very important,” Chris said.

Chris works for a contractor aboard Cherry Point MCAS.  Sharon is a bookkeeper for a furniture store.  The couple’s three children are Elisha – 31, Melissa – 26 and Amber – 21.

“Earning our degrees is about finishing something we never got to do when we were younger,” Sharon stated.  “And we can’t wait to say ‘We did it!’  We are so appreciative of this scholarship and what it will mean as we continue our educational journey.”
