Mount Olive College is proud to offer the RN to BSN program, fostering students’ ability through the liberal arts components to enhance their development intellectually, socially, culturally and spiritually as professional nurses. The bachelor of science degree in nursing is designed for licensed registered nurses who have graduated from a regionally-accredited associate degree or diploma program in nursing and are planning to return to school for a bachelor’s degree and/or preparation for graduate-level education.
Most applicants will have their general education requirements met through their previous nursing curriculum if a grade of C or better was obtained. All applicants must have their general education requirements met prior to starting the core nursing curriculum. One hallmark of the Mount Olive College BSN program is there is no testing of prior nursing knowledge if the RN has an active RN license with the state board of nursing.
- Convenient course format allows students to complete assignments at the time and location best suited for nurses’ busy schedules.
- Classes are small and offer individual guidance and expert faculty.
- Most students will take one course per five weeks and can comfortably complete the core nursing curriculum in five semesters. Others may proceed at a faster pace.
- The program is reading and writing comprehensive and will require a minimum of 25 hours per week to complete classes and assignments.
- Three sessions are held each year: fall, spring and summer.

NUR 300 Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing: An introductory online course that is designed to aid the RN to BSN student on how to improve their critical thinking skills to the baccalaureate level. Students will develop strategies for achieving educational goals that will help them be successful in the undergraduate program as well as in their professional development. Students will also be introduced to the College library and databases, APA formatting (which is necessary for all their core major courses), plagarism and paraphrasing exercises, and learn how to access all their resources successfully.
NUR 310 Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System: An overview of the U.S. Health Care System - implications of environmental trends, health care policy, and health care organizations, and introduction to the financing of health care in America.
NUR 320 Relational Nursing Leadership: This course examines the leadership process in nursing. The student studies the effects of leadership theory in the management of people and tasks within the health care environment, such as teaching assistive personnel the requirements of ensuring security of patient’s medical information and professional ethics. Emphasis is placed on a humanistic model for teaching and learning that stresses interpersonal communication as an essential component of nursing and leadership.
NUR 330 Law & Ethics for Health Care Professionals: Course focuses on the principles of law and the U.S. legal system as applied in health care: organizations, documentation, privacy, security, release of health information, liability, consent, malpractice, major ethical theories, ethical decision making models, patients’ rights, confidentially, informed consent, professional relationships and allocation of scarce resources.
NUR 340 Social & Cultural Issues in Health Care: This course examines social and cultural issues in health care. The student studies the effects of societal pressures, cultural influences and diversity on health care, including current and past trends in health care treatment.
NUR 350 Global Perspectives of Health Care: Content includes an historical overview of health care systems in the United States and other countries around the world, including: issues of cost, quality and access, as well as trends, such as, cultural diversity, demographic shifts, economics, technological influences and ethical issues impacting health care delivery. The student will gain the essential understanding of the continuum of care and examine the impact of integrated delivery systems on care delivery processes and patient outcomes.
NUR 400 Applied Statistics for Health Care: Professional nurses must be able to critique and understand the strengths and weakness of statistical design and analysis in order to be able to develop evidence-based practices in a clinical setting. Content teaches nursing students the selection, application and evaluation of statistical analysis techniques, as well as the evaluation and clinical application of the results derived from this analysis.
NUR 410 Nursing Research: Course introduces students to the principles and methods of research and emphasizes the application of research in nursing as a product and process. It prepares students to critically read research articles and relate the value of that research to nursing practice and client outcomes; to develop a research problem and literature review; to participate with a research team; and to utilize nursing research in their practice. Confidentiality is emphasized to promote and ensure complete patient privacy. (prerequisite: successful completion of all NUR courses except NUR 460; corequisite NUR 460)
NUR 420 Evidence–Based Practice: Course prepares the student to become proficient in the utilization of research, the critical evaluation of research, identification of researchable problems within a variety of practice settings and the application of research to clinical problems. The course incorporates both quantitative and qualitative research methods, application of statistical analysis of data, the utilization of information systems for accessing, storing and analyzing data, identification of researchable clinical problems, critical analysis and application of existing research and application of theoretical constructs to frame a research proposal. Class assignments related to evidence based practice are augmented as the student identifies a researchable nursing problem within his/her own practice setting and develops a related research proposal. (prerequisite: successful completion of all NUR courses except NUR 410 and NUR 460)
NUR 430 Health Policy and Issues: Course examines current trends in health care policies; analyzing the impact that policy implementation has on the role of the nurse. Overview of the process of policy implementation and historical trends will be introduced to assist the student in better understanding the framework of today’s health policy.
NUR 440 Community Health Nursing: This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop a holistic view of the biopsychosocial needs of individuals and multi-problem families in the community. Emphasis is on meeting the health needs of patients in different environmental settings.
NUR 450 Nursing Management Strategies: Course analyzes management strategies in nursing; case studies and simulation will allow for student participation in the application of management strategies. The student studies the effects of varying management styles on the working environment, patient outcomes and the goals of the institution.
NUR 460 Health Care Outcomes Management through EBP and Quality: Course prepares the student to become proficient in the utilization of research to improve health care outcomes and quality practice of the nurse. Class assignments related to evidence-based practice are augmented as the student identifies a nursing problem within his/her own practice setting and develops a plan for quality improvement based on evidence found in the literature (prerequisite: successful completion of all NUR courses except NUR 410 corequisite; NUR 410).
NUR 470 Theoretical Constructs for Leadership Roles in Nursing: Course prepares the student with the theoretical foundation to function in management level nursing roles across a variety of nursing specialties and health care settings. The student will be prepared to understand, evaluate and utilize appropriate theories within his/her own practice. Theoretical constructs will include nursing and other relevant theories from the social, organizational and behavioral sciences. Specific theories addressed include: systems, change, nursing management, and leadership theories, as well as ethical principles in health care and professional role development. Theoretical concepts are augmented by individual projects that require the student to examine his/her practice setting using the above constructs (RN to BSN majors only).
NUR 480 Professional Role Development: Course focuses on the ongoing challenges of self-improvement as a professional. An examination of the impact of continuing education, professional organizations and certifications on the quality of nursing care will be examined. Students will identify career aspirations and pathways to achieve short and long-term professional goals.
